Lightspeed Loyalty

We know it can be difficult to get people through the door, and it can be even more difficult to get them to come back time and again. One way to encourage shoppers and diners back is to have a loyalty scheme. A well-designed loyalty program rewards loyal customers, as well as incentivising new customers to return.

Types of Loyalty

Not all customers return for the same reasons. There are three main types of loyalty:

  • Habitual Loyalty - Loyalty to this company because I went there first. My experience is predictable and easy. They may not be the best, but I know what I’m getting.
  • Transactional Loyalty - No emotional connection to the company. Purely business transaction of money for product/service. If another option came along which was better value, I would try it.
  • Emotional Loyalty - I feel the company cares about me. I am treated as more than just a customer. If something else similar comes along, I wouldn’t try it, as it would be a betrayal of this company.

Habitual loyalty and transactional loyalty cannot be depended upon. Habits can be broken, and customers are willing to try competitors. Emotional loyalty is the type you will want to cultivate. This can be done via the type of communication between you and the customer, or through a well thought out loyalty program.

How do you decide what type of loyalty scheme to offer? The Olson 2018 report on Humanising Loyalty found that: 90% of consumers want loyalty programs to help them save money, 89% of customers want rewards that are reasonably attainable, and 79% of consumers want to be surprised with extras they care about. Customers need to be encouraged to return, as the same study found that 70% of retail and restaurant customers don’t come back after their first visit.

Lightspeed Loyalty for Restaurant is a points-based loyalty program. Once connected to your Restaurant account, the POS app will allow you to:

  • Award Loyalty points
  • Redeem Loyalty rewards
  • Redeem one-time rewards for specific products
  • Accept payments from Lightspeed Loyalty app (Premium package required)

There is also a web-based Loyalty Manager tool, from which you can:

  • Manage rewards, groups, customers, and campaigns
  • View and download point and credit usage reports
  • Send news alerts and push notifications
  • Create emails and texts for marketing (Premium package required)

Your customers will earn points through ‘campaigns’. The Pay + Earn campaign is your foundation and determines how many points are earned per transaction. Additional campaigns can be added based on new loyalty members, VIPs, referral bonuses, and more.

Customers to earn points based on total spend. This is the amount they pay for a transaction after any offers, or discounts, have been applied. Once enough points have been collected they can be redeemed for rewards. The rewards themselves are divided into Point Rewards and One-Time Rewards. Points can be redeemed in three ways:

  • In-app QR code
  • Phone number
  • Account card

Customers can be organised into groups based on locations, rewards, spending, or special days, and you can target specific campaigns to individual groups. This can add a sense of individuality to the customer, and they are more likely to come back to you as they will feel like you know them and care about them.

Lightspeed Loyalty also gives you the opportunity to gather more valuable information about your customers' shopping habits with a history of points earned and redeemed.

Lightspeed Loyalty for retail is a points-based reward program which links directly with the Lightspeed Retail system. Loyalty for Retail offers:

  • Registration via phone number
  • SMS messaging
  • Email campaign builder
  • Web-based customer portal
  • Apple Wallet Quick-account-view
  • User groups
  • Starter kit of marketing collateral for an in-store launch
